Sightseeing in Lassithi, Crete
While staying at the Anemos Villas in Elounda, you can start your tour of the Lassithi Prefecture by visiting the sites in the area. To begin with, purchase a detailed Crete map and mark the place you want to visit. Beneath the Cretan Sea waters are the remains of the Ancient City of Olounda (as Elounda was called in ancient times). The ruins of the Paleo-Christian Basilica and the stone windmills are also impressive. Opposite Elounda is Spinalonga Island, which you can easily reach by tour boat from the port of Elounda Bay.
If you are an archaeology and history buff, we recommend travelling further from Elounda to visit the magnificent Minoan Palace in Zakros, the Ancient Cities in Praisos, Itanos and Driros and the Settlements from various Minoan Eras in Palekastro, Pachia Ammos, Myrtos, Hamezi, Makrygialos and Gournia. The Archaeological and Folklore Museums of Agios Nikolaos, Sitia and Ierapetra have wonderful displays of historical artifacts from digs in the prefecture. You will be impressed by the Venetian Fortress “Kazarma” in Sitia and the Kales Fortress in Ierapetra.
From the religious point of view, the prefecture of Lassithi provides an abundance of interesting sites. The most preeminent are the Toplou Monastery in Sitia, the Church of Agios Nikolaos in the capital city, the Church of Timios Stavros in Kalamavka and the Church of Agion Panton on the isle opposite Agios Nikolaos (which you can visit only on the name day of Agion Panton). Nature lovers are sure to be enchanted by the Palm Tree Forest in Vai, as well as a number of other natural sites like the exquisite Milatos Cave and the Cha and Chavga Gorges.
Elounda Beaches - Lassithi Beaches
The Prefecture of Lassithi offer visitors many beautiful beaches. Apart from the beaches in Elounda and nearby Plaka, we also suggest visiting the northern beaches of Almyros, Ammoudara, Driros, Havania, Istro, Mochlos, Pachia Ammos, Sisi and Sitia. Along the eastern coast of Lassithi are several wonderful beaches, such as Itanos, Kato Zakros, Palekastro and the world-famous Palm Tree Beach of Vai.
If you would like to visit the beaches on the southern side of the Lassithi Prefecture, we recommend the beaches of Agia Fotia, Ierapetra, Langada, Makrygialos, Myrtos and Xerokambos. Off the southern coast of Lassithi are the islands of Chryssi and Koufonissi which have soft sands and azure waters. You can reach the islands by tour boat from Ierapetra and Makrygialos, respectively. |
